RTPI Scotland to sit on Town Centre Recovery Group

The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Scotland has welcomed the announcement by Communities Secretary Aileen Campbell on establishing a new expert group to build on the progress of the Scottish Government’s 2013 Town Centre Action Plan.  The group will work with communities to explore how town centres can be revitalised and renewed in the wake of the COVID-19 and will include members from a small number of organisations including the RTPI.

RTPI Scotland Director Craig McLaren said “Current circumstances mean that there is an urgent need to rethink how we can ensure our town centres are vibrant hearts of their communities in the future. We are pleased that Scottish Government has recognised this and established the expert group. We are also delighted that they see the important and constructive role that planners have to play in this, especially as our recently published research Plan The World We Need shows how government can and should capitalise on the expertise of spatial planners to tackle place-based inequality, enable a green industrial revolution, prioritise healthy and sustainable modes of transport and coordinate the rapid deployment of zero carbon infrastructure."
