The UK faces a number of pressing challenges which cannot be tackled as isolated issues. Strategic planning seeks a coordinated response across wide geographical areas like city-regions, and across multiple sectors including housing, transport, health and the environment.
In late 2023 the RTPI's research team commissioned a consortium of researchers to study the status and potential of strategic planning in England. Our Smart City-Regions project explored how data, technology and devolution are coming together to drive a new wave of strategic planning.
We have also recently advocated strategic planning as a major priority for planning reform in England and will be continuing to develop our position on this in the coming months.
