We continue our study tours of towns in the North West with a focus on Stockport Council’s regeneration of the town centre area.

Our route will include Stockport Exchange, and the transformed bus station - Stockport Interchange, which is due to be completed in Spring 2024. It will also include the ongoing redevelopment of Weir Mill by Capital + Centric, the sites earmarked for the recently announced ‘Stockport 8’ cluster, the Market and Underbanks, and lots more.

We will learn about how and why Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC) was established with a view to shaping future improvements and helping the town move towards its regeneration targets, along with the development of the Strategic Regeneration Framework which sets out the vision for Town Centre West, estimating the delivery of 4,000 new homes and 1 million sq.ft. of workspace as part of a sustainable, walkable neighbourhood across 130 acres.

The tour will be led by Paul Richards, the Chief Executive of the Stockport MDC since its formation in 2019 who has led on the strategic vision and a number of schemes. Since 2017, Paul has also been the Director of Development and Regeneration at Stockport Council and is responsible for the Council’s £1 billion transformation programme, as well as delivering a range of schemes as part of a direct interventionist approach to changing the town.

Daniel Hewitt, the Council’s Town Centre Planning Manager, will join the tour to discuss the key planning issues that arise in supporting the delivery of Stockport West’s transformation from a development management perspective.

Luke Jiggins, a chartered Principal Infrastructure Planner at WSP with experience including water, highways, and local government schemes, will discuss the preparation of the planning application for the Stockport Interchange project, a transformational sustainable transport infrastructure scheme which is currently under construction and due to be completed in time for our tour.
