This webinar forms part of our RTPI Online series and is brought to you by Planning Aid England and the North West Region.  It is open to current Planning Aid England Volunteers only.

The pandemic has changed the way we engage. Society as a whole has switched to using technology at a greater rate than ever before, whilst planners have often been forced to rethink their approaches to engagement.

To better understand this shift, and what it might mean for how we engage with communities going forward, the RTPI and Grayling interviewed 24 experts, surveyed 115 industry professionals and sought the views of more than 2,000 members of the general public across the UK. The results were published in Grayling and the RTPI’s Future of Engagement paper (December 2020).

Bristol based, Place Studio is at the forefront of this shift. The practice provides policy and design consultancy that “stitches and knits” together people, places, ideas and aspirations though community consultation. Place Studio’s work on the Ross-on-Wye Neighbourhood Plan was recognised by the RTPI through its commendation at this year’s ‘Planning Excellence’ awards also worked with Planning Aid Wales on a report for the welsh govt on the value of engagement.

In this session, our speakers will present their work, offering their thoughts on how consultation techniques will change in the near future. Following presentations, there will be an opportunity for volunteers to meet each other via facilitated online breakout groups to discuss the research and relay their own experiences of undertaking their casework recently.

This event will be chaired by Benjamin Vickers, Senior planner at Cheshire East Council and part of the North West Planning Aid England Task Group.
