The housing crisis existed before COVID19. Solving it, remains fundamental to the quality of living and working in the UK; as we emerge from lockdown. Some commentators have suggested we will see relatively steep declines in house prices, whilst others believe the market will be more resilient. A variety of ways forward has also been proposed – from new resourcing and powers to promote development to deregulation aimed at unleashing the market. However, there is broad agreement that we need to deliver more affordable, secure and sustainable new housing.
Planning reform is not a silver bullet solution to delivering this, but good planning can be an important part of the solution. Now is the time for those involved in planning to engage meaningfully in order to shape our living and working environment.
