Want to make your town or city a better place to live? If you were a Lego fan when you were young – or find meditation in Minecraft – a career in planning could be for you.

Why plan

Town planners decide how land should be used and protected. Find out how you can become one, and help tackle climate change, social justice and public health.

What a town planner does

Planners organise, design and make decisions on where new homes, roads, schools, shops and everything we need to live and work should be built.  At the same time, they try to make towns, cities and the countryside attractive, safe and environmentally friendly. They work with local communities, businesses and politicians.

What to study

There are a number of different ways to get into the planning profession and learn the skills you need to succeed in this exciting and ever-changing career.

Planning can be a very technical process but it touches people's lives. You need to be able to speak and write, and have conversations, in ways that make it accessible to everyone.  Rosie, Chartered Town Planner
