Event Description

Water Lane is an exciting and unique development site in Exeter. It is located adjacent to the River Exe, historic Ship Canal and Quay which are cherished destinations within the City.  The area has an incredibly rich history which is central to its appeal and continues to help shape development and re-use of surrounding areas. Exeter City Council have recently adopted the Liveable Water Lane Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) to guide future development at Water Lane. The SPD sets out how development will transform a challenging, under-used brownfield site into a vibrant, low-carbon, waterside neighbourhood, setting a new standard for urban regeneration in Exeter and beyond. Join us for talks from  Exeter City Council, Avalon Heritage and Planning and LDA for an informative tour of the area. The event will provide insight on the history and existing qualities of Exeter Quay and the influences shaping future plans for the transformation of Water Lane.

  • 1530-15.45 Registration / Tea & Coffee at Custom House
  • 15.45-1630: Presentations

On the walking tour we will have a look at the row of listed buildings close to the Custom House which include the Grade I Quay House and a number of GII* buildings, including the Harbour Master’s Office. On the other side of the river, we can look at the revival of the canal basin and reuse of listed warehouses.

    • An overview of the Liveable Exeter initiative and Water Lane Design Code from David Wesselingh at LDA Design.
Liveable Exeter is a growth and city-making initiative that ensures that Exeter grows its success is sustained. The initiative is captured in the emerging Local Plan through seven placemaking principles which will strengthen and reinvigorate existing communities and repurpose and transform other parts of the city which need to change. David will provide a brief overview of this initiative and how it has guided the vision, masterplan and design proposals for development at Water Lane. On the walking tour we will highlight the main placemaking elements of the scheme as well as the opportunities and challenges presented by this unique location.
