The RTPI has launched a new RTPI Core CPD Framework, developed with input from members, employers and the wider profession, highlighting the skills and knowledge areas our members need to meet the planning challenges of today and the future.
The new framework provides a comprehensive overview of the core CPD for you to consider when you are planning your CPD. The Framework will structure the CPD delivered by the Institute. Look out for the new logo indicating the professional skills and planning knowledge being delivered by the framework.

Sources of CPD
Lots of different activities can be CPD. The RTPI is not prescriptive about the types of activity that count as CPD, recognising that you are best placed to assess the value of an activity for your professional development.
You don't just have to attend courses and conferences to meet RTPI CPD requirements. Do make sure that your CPD links back to the objectives that you set yourself in your Professional Development Plan. It could also be an unexpected source of learning which helps your development as a planner.
See recording and planning CPD and our CPD FAQs for more information on what counts as CPD and how it should be recorded.
Consider some of the following sources of CPD:
Conferences and training courses

N.B. Routine reading of the technical press would not usually be acceptable because we are looking for a range of CPD.
Work-based learning or other learning
- Consider a secondment or work shadowing
- Carry out project work
- Get involved in a professional group
- Attend examinations in public, public inquiries or neighbourhood forums
- Become a coach
RTPI activities of a professional nature
Only include these sorts of activities if you have learnt from them.
