Our General Assembly meets four times a year in person to discuss important issues relating to the Institute and planning policy and practice.

The Assembly consists of both elected and appointed representatives. All elected members serve for a two-year term.

Meetings Dates in 2025

  • Wednesday 22 January 2025 - Stationers' Hall, St Paul's, London.
  • Wednesday 19 March 2025 - Regency Hyatt, Birmingham
  • Wednesday 18 June 2025 - Asia House, Mayfair, London
  • Wednesday 8 October 2025 - Deansgate Hilton, Manchester

Meetings are typically held from 11am to around 4pm.

2025 meeting topics

So far in 2025, the General Assembly have received:

  • Presentations on research into strategic planning current practices and future directions and the Wales Perspective on strategic planning
  • A presentation from the MHCLG on initiatives to build capacity and capabilities in the planning profession
  • Updates on the terminology and governance of the Young Planners network
  • Information on the RTPI's new mentoring programme
  • A presentation on spatial approaches to energy planning
  • Updates from across the Nations and Regions.

2024 meeting topics

In 2024 the General Assembly received updates from all areas of the RTPI and discussed the RTPI's Corporate Strategy, Education for Everyone and Planning as a career choice looking at research data on routes into the planning profession. 2024 President Lindsey Richards FRTPI has written some President's blogs about these topics.

2023 meeting topics

In 2023, General Assembly had discussions on strategic planning, digital planning and artificial intelligence (AI), the future of the green belt, and how the profession can self-promote to reduce abuse and harassment.

How do I get involved?

The General Assembly reflects the make up of our membership. General Assembly members are either elected by the members within their class of membership or as representatives of their geographical location. All RTPI members are eligible to apply for at least one of the roles on the General Assembly.
