RTPI members from all membership categories elect new members to the General Assembly. The General Assembly is intended to reflect the membership of the RTPI and as such there are positions for chartered members, associate members, student and licentiate members, and legal member and legal associate members.

- Region and Nation General Assembly Representatives. These roles are open for application in September each year through our Regions and Nations elections.
Outline of roles
The RTPI’s byelaws provide for a General Assembly (GA) to act as a forum for debate about the development of planning policy and practice, the corporate policy of the RTPI and other issues relevant to the RTPI’s objects.
The General Assembly meet four times a year to receive updates on the RTPI’s work and to discuss key topics relating to the RTPI and the planning profession. Members of the General Assembly also elect the Board of Trustees, hold the Board to account and advise the Board on any matters referred to it from the Board.

Minimum commitment
- 4 full day meetings a year (in London or major cities around the UK)
- 4 half day Standing Committee meetings a year if appointed to a committee. (All GA members are also expected to apply to become a member of one of the Board’s five standing committees/panels. Appointments will be made in November 2025.
- Reading papers in preparation for meetings
- Induction sessions in your first year

Impact of the role
As the voice of members, the General Assembly helps shape the future development and strategies of the RTPI. Members participate in General Assembly meetings alongside other planners from different sectors, geographical locations and stages of their career. The General Assembly hears about the activities of the RTPI and inputs into its future activities.
How to get involved/How to nominate yourself
Complete an online nomination form sent to you by [email protected] in June 2025.
In your nomination form, provide the names and details of four RTPI members from your membership category who support your nomination (e.g. four current chartered members of the RTPI if you are applying to be a chartered member of GA). Once you have submitted your nomination form, your four named supporters will be sent an email from Mi-Voice asking them to complete a supporters’ forms.
Your candidate statement will be published on the RTPI website and on the Mi-Voice voting pages in August and all eligible members will be invited to view it and vote for their chosen General Assembly members. The elected General Assembly members for 2026/2027 will be announced in September 2025.
