Chair of the Board role and nomination process

The Chair of the Board of Trustees is a member of The Board of Trustees. The Board is responsible for setting the strategic direction and managing the affairs of the RTPI, overseeing how the Institute is meeting its strategic objectives and delivering services of value to our members.

The Chair of the Board of Trustees is elected by Chartered members of the General Assembly.

Outline of roles

The Chair of the Board is responsible for maximising the effectiveness of the Board, determining the business of the Board and chairing Board meetings to ensure balanced debates and timely decisions. The Chair works closely with the Chief Executive between Board meetings and leads on the Chief Executive's performance appraisals.

Eligibility Criteria

  • A chartered RTPI Member who has held a governance role at the RTPI for at least three of the last five years.
  • Leadership and chairing experience, with strong interpersonal skills.
  • A strong and passionate advocate for the RTPI’s strategic objectives and vision.

Retired chartered members retain their chartered status after retirement and are therefore eligible to apply for a Trustee role and any position requiring chartered status.

Minimum time commitment

  • 6 full day Board meetings a year and an annual Trustee training day
  • 4 General Assembly meetings a year, presenting the Board’s quarterly report to members
  • Attendance at other sub or standing committee/panel meetings when required
  • Frequent communication with the Chief Executive, Vice Chair of the Board, other Trustees and RTPI officers in relation to agenda setting, the development of Board papers and other RTPI business.

Impact of the role

The Chair of the Board of Trustees leads the Board in ensuring that the RTPI has strong governance, clear strategic direction and is accountable to its members. The Chair also acts as a vital support and sounding board for the Chief Executive.

How to get involved

Complete an online nomination form sent to you by [email protected] in June 2025.

Provide the names and details of six RTPI chartered members who support your nomination. Once you have submitted your nomination form, your six named supporters will be sent an email from Mi-Voice and asked to complete a supporter's form.

Your candidate statement will be published on the RTPI website and on the Mi-Voice voting pages in August and chartered General Assembly members will be invited to view it and vote for the Chair of the Board of Trustees. The elected Chair for 2026 will be announced in September 2025.
