Transport and land use planning HYBRID Seminar

Since graduating from UWE with an MA in Town and Country Planning Alexis started out in development management. After being made an offer he couldn’t refuse, Alexis transferred into transport planning where he now has over 10 years’ experience as a chartered Town Planner. Alexis has a wide range of experience from leading on the Western Gateway Sub-National Transport Body’s Rail Strategy, preparing major transport bids, writing supplementary planning documents, to delivering small scale projects on the ground. Not content with just the two degrees Alexis completed an MSc in Transport Planning and Engineering at the University of Southampton to broaden his knowledge and expertise in transport planning. Looking for new challenges Alexis moved back into development management and is BCP’s Transport Development Manager.

Bob is Regional Director for Transport and Spatial Planning at AECOM with over 40 years’ experience, particularly in the field of links between transport schemes, land use and urban regeneration worldwide.  His career has spanned local government, urban development corporations and transit authorities, and transport consultancy. He was Planning Manager for Docklands Light Railway and prior to that public transport lead for the world- renowned London Docklands Development Corporation for 15 years.

He has spent a substantial part of his career looking at new development and regeneration and its implications for transport. He has frequently been part of wider teams providing advice to government, local and regional authorities and development agencies, for their Regional and City Structure Plans, Airport Cities, Planning Frameworks and Masterplans.

In particular, he has been an advocate of transit orientated development and using public transport as the catalyst for new development. Most recently identifying the best locations for new and expanded settlements on a regional basis and looking at the key catalysts to kick start sustainable new communities.

With 16 years in the industry, Clare is an experienced project manager of a range of  behaviour change projects focusing on sustainable and active travel. She is now the Programme Manager at Sustrans for a vast portfolio of 30 behaviour change and engagement projects across the South,  spanning  different themes and Geographical areas. These include health, sustainable transport and air quality and engage with local people through schools, workplaces and communities.

David is a Chartered Transport Planner, holding the Transport Planning Professional qualification, and has 35 years’ experience working in consultancy on projects for the private and public sectors. His experience includes Development and masterplan projects, Travel Planning including guidance, tools and implementation, Public Transport including bus service assessment, park and ride and bus priority, town centre and corridor studies and traffic management and calming schemes. He is a CIHT Technical Champion for Transport Planning and Sustainable Development and is engaged in training and mentoring on a regular basis. David has recently completed a PhD at Loughborough University studying, ‘Transport Planning Practice in Large Scale Housing Developments in England’. He loves travelling, reading, photography and listening to vinyl records.

Ada is RTPI’s Infrastructure and Climate Change Specialist, leading on the institute’s policy positions on the topics of transport, infrastructure and climate change. She holds a PhD in Land Economy and an MPhil in Environmental Policy, both from the University of Cambridge. Her research and teaching experience spans the areas of public engagement, planning theory and environmental policy. She was a journalist at the start of her career, specialising in transport infrastructure news.

Fergus is a Senior Policy Adviser in the Planning Division at the Department for Transport. His work focuses on development of the Connectivity Tool, including user testing with local authorities and across central government. Fergus has recently presented papers at the European Transport Conference and the Transport Practitioners Meeting. He previously worked in infrastructure planning in the Department, managing applications for Development Consent Orders and Transport and Works Act orders.

Marco is a chartered town planner working as a Team Leader in the Planning Division at the Department for Transport. He works across the team’s projects, collaborating closely on infrastructure and planning policy with other government departments as well as the Department’s arms-length bodies, such as National Highways and Active Travel England. Marco is also a visiting lecturer on urban design at the Bartlett School of Planning, University College London, and previously worked for the Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Service and before that in the private sector.

Robert is a chartered town planner who is Head of Planning and Head of the Planning Profession at the Department for Transport. Robert leads the strategic direction for planning policy and the profession at the Department, and he established its Planning Centre for Excellence to provide expert advice on transport and spatial planning across Whitehall. He recently launched the Spatial, Transport and Environmental, Planning network to support the growth of the planning profession in government. Robert previously worked at the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities and Enfield council.
