New director of careers and education to join RTPI

The institute has appointed Professor John Sturzaker to lead its careers and education division.

John joins the Institute from the School of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences at the University of Hertfordshire, where he was the Ebenezer Howard Professor of Planning. He brings with him a long career in both planning academia and practice, as well as a clear understanding of the challenges that face the planning pipeline.

A Fellow of the institute, John joined in 2003 and has been an active volunteer for many years. He also has qualifications in Learning and Teaching from the University of Liverpool.

This appointment has been made at a time when the pipeline of planners and the necessary skills for planning have a renewed focus. If the profession is to keep pace with the incoming reforms and growth agenda, it will need to make sure that every new planner is equipped with the latest knowledge and skills.

There is also a growing need to ensure that the next generation is properly inspired to consider planning as a career.

Victoria Hills, Chief Executive of the RTPI, said: “I am delighted that John has chosen to take up this position and am excited to see what innovative approaches he brings to the role. He is joining the institute at a time when careers and education have never been more important. Changes coming down the track mean that planners will need to be equipped for the future, and I have faith that John is the right person to help us achieve that goal.”

Professor John Sturzaker said: “The RTPI plays an important role in promoting the profession to potential future planners. Without them we won’t be able to tackle the core issues facing our communities, such as climate action, growth and sustainability. I've been a proud member of the RTPI for more than 20 years, and I am keen to help make RTPI the go to place for planners everywhere looking to develop their skill sets and deliver for communities.”

John’s new position will see him lead and maintain the institute’s high standards in relation to education, accreditation; drive the delivery of apprenticeships, bursaries and inspiration programmes; and act as the professional standards champion. He will also oversee Planning Aid England, bringing a wealth of experience to help drive forward this important part of the RTPI Strategic Plan.

John will be joining the institute in late October 2025.
