Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Fellow Richard Blyth has been elected to the European Council of Spatial Planners (ECTP-CEU) Executive Committee (ExCo), the governing body for the organisation.

Richard is one of the RTPI Representatives for the ECTP-CEU. He was recently appointed RTPI Representative following a call for expressions of interest open to all Chartered Members. He stood for election to the ExCo during the recent ECTP-CEU Spring General Assembly.

Richard brings a wealth of experience with in-depth expertise in planning policy, research and practice across the English planning system in a variety of roles  as well as experience of representing UK planning at European and global level.

Richard will start his position at the ECTP-CEU Autumn General Assembly which will coincide with the 40th anniversary of the organisation.  The event will bring the planning community from across Europe to celebrate this important milestone.  RTPI members can register to attend the event and further information will be available in due course.

Richard Blyth said: "I am pleased that my colleagues across Europe have chosen to show confidence in my abilities as a member of the Executive Committee. I am looking forward to serving the ECTP-CEU in the coming four years.  I am delighted that my election takes place as we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the founding the organisation and look forward to seeing as many colleagues as possible joining us in Brussel for the celebrations.”

Janet Askew, past RTPI president and ECTP-CEU vice president said: “I am delighted that the RTPI will be represented by Richard Blyth. His long experience and commitment to the European Council of Spatial Planners will ensure that his contribution will be welcomed and highly regarded.  In my role as vice-president of ECTP-CEU, I look forward to working with him over the coming year.”

The RTPI is a founding member of the organisation that brings together professional spatial planning associations and institutes from 24 European countries as well as corresponding members.  The ECTP-CEU advocates for planning and the profession, and promotes best practice, continuous professional development, knowledge exchange and learning as well as ethics and professional standards across the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe. ECTP-CEU engages in dialogue with local, national and European governments, sets standards of conduct and education for the spatial planning profession and identifies, and rewards examples of good planning all over Europe.
