The RTPI welcomes applications for membership from planning lecturers, teachers and researchers. Academics can join as an Associate or Chartered member depending on their experience.

Why join?

Apply

If you're a PhD student, or early career researcher or lecturer, with a minimum of 2 years' experience, you may be eligible to achieve the partial professional qualification, Associate of the RTPI. Associates can progress to Chartered membership through the Associate Assessment of Professional Competence (A-APC).

"As an academic, [Associate membership] opened the door to a range of interdisciplinary spatial planning teaching and research."

Dr Brian Webb, Lecturer in Spatial Planning, Cardiff University

Apply Chartered Town Planner MRTPI

If you're a senior researcher or lecturer, or an academic leader, with a minimum of 5 years' experience you may be eligible to apply directly for Chartered membership through the Experienced Practitioner Assessment of Professional Competence (EP-APC).  Be recognised by your peers at the gold standard for all practitioners working or teaching planning.

"As an academic, Chartered membership provides me with the opportunity to remain fully grounded in the profession. It provides me with the ability to network with a wide range of members, both in practice and in academia, and to remain at the forefront of thought and debate."
