Riverside Sunderland Regeneration Maker & Faber offices and Wear footbridge entered by DPP Planning 

This submission showcases the new footbridge and Maker & Faber of the ongoing Riverside Sunderland regeneration masterplan. The two are intrinsically linked, with the goal of boosting the local economy, enhancing connectivity between key parts of the city with the footbridge and driving productivity on a key site through the delivery of two exceptionally designed offices, providing an attractive opportunity for prospective employers. The proposals have already delivered measurable economic benefits, with an estimated £8million worth of value delivered to local communities through the footbridge and Maker & Faber attracting new investment, instilling confidence in the city, employers and talent.

COMMENDED Award

The Story entered by Kier Construction

The Story is a unique project that sympathetically unites a mix of old and new to create a superb new visitor attraction in County Durham. With accessibility, sustainability and the user experience at the heart of its design, the distinctive building has already attracted over 90,000 visitors in its first nine months and provided access to over 800 years of County Durham's history.

The project showcases everything good about the construction industry. The teamwork, collaboration, adaptability and pride from the client and project team has produced a fantastic new facility and brought a once unused building back into public use.

The judges said,

"A true collaborative effort that marries old and new with all of the recognised benefits that heritage regeneration can bring to both people and places in a sustainable way. Physical regeneration, learning and access to heritage across a breadth of sectors".

The Rising at Raby Castle, Park and Gardens entered by Raby Castle 

The Rising development at Raby Castle, Park and Gardens demonstrates what can be achieved when the collaborative planners combine with an ambitious vision, commitment to quality and sustainability, and a passion for heritage landscapes. The resulting place of harmony is a testament to good planning; a place where new builds sit comfortably alongside refurbished historic buildings, 21st century green technologies meet centuries-old, salvaged materials; a site that now reads as one. This project provides a sustainable future for these treasured buildings and gardens, providing a place where visitors are enchanted, and the welcome is always genuine.
