Event Description
An ever-growing body of research highlights the vital connection between our health and the places we live. The design of neighbourhoods, the quality and suitability of housing, access to green space, and availability of sustainable transport options all significantly impact health—and all can be shaped through the spatial planning system.
Across the North of England, Public Health and Planning teams are increasingly working upstream, collaborating with planners to create environments that promote healthier lives. This evolving partnership is unlocking new opportunities for innovation and impact.
While planners have long aimed to create healthy, thriving, and sustainable communities, closer collaboration with Public Health has introduced fresh perspectives and novel approaches. Innovations include “embedded” roles that bridge Planning and Public Health, joint work on design codes and masterplans, shared use of data and evidence tools, and integrated policy development through Local Plans. Regional and local “Healthy Places” groups are also emerging, bringing together professionals from across sectors to support and advocate for health-focused planning.
