Event Description
Join us for a walking tour that explores the rich history of North Kensington through the lens of urban planning and housing. In celebration of Black History Month, this tour will highlight key neighbourhoods, architectural landmarks, and the historical impact of policies on Black residents. Learn about the resilience and contributions of Black communities to the development of cities, and reflect on how urban planning continues to shape the future of these neighbourhoods.
Learning outcomes
Participants will:
- Gain insights into how urban planning, including housing segregation and infrastructure development, have historically affected Black residents of North Kensington and surrounding urban areas.
- Learn about the enduring resilience and significant contributions of Black communities in shaping the cultural and social fabric of the neighbourhood. Examples include activism opposing the Westway and getting space under the Westway allocated for use by the local community; challenging police brutality; and seeking justice following the Grenfell Tower Fire, to mention a few.
- Engage in critical thinking about how contemporary urban planning continues to influence the development of neighbourhoods, particularly those historically marginalized, and how planning decisions can contribute to more inclusive and equitable cities in the future.

- 5:30pm End point: The Tabernacle 34-35 Powis Sq, London W11 2AY (11 minutes walk from Ladbroke Gove and from Westbourne Park Underground Stations)
