Event Description

Planning is founded on the basis of creating healthier and more liveable places. This seminar will combine theory, practice and policy to provide attendees with a clear understanding of how health and planning are interlinked.

The seminar team (consisting of members from academia, consultancy and law) will ask the question ‘what does it mean to be healthy?’ and explore the importance of the public health policy to promote positive health behaviour change. With this background, the team will then reflect on and investigate how the meaning of health has shaped the development of planning policy and practice today.

The seminar will also provide a review of recent changes to the 2024 NPPF with regards to health and provide recent examples of where health has been a key matter in relevant and recent planning decisions.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand what it means to be healthy;
  • Outline how health psychology as a discipline sits in relation to public health and planning;
  • Describe the components of the Behaviour Change Wheel;
  • Identify examples of public health in practice;
  • Analyse the NPPF and how it considers health in decision making;
  • Evaluate how ‘health’ is influencing planning practice and the submission of planning applications; and
  • Draw upon landmark and important up to date case law and examples of planning decisions where health has been a key matter.
