Rewiring Planning? AI, human insight, and the places we shape

RTPI East Midlands members only event

Join us for a roundtable discussion

Tuesday 22 July 9.30am-11.30am

Harborough Borough Council Chamber Room

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to evolve, its role in urban planning and placemaking is expanding rapidly.

In the UK, at what might be termed the “official” level – Government and RTPI – much of the focus so far has been on using AI to speed up Development Management processes and free-up associated resources. But AI-powered tools can perform tasks ranging from predictive analytics and generative urban design to augmented community engagement and automated policy formulation. As these technologies become more sophisticated, fundamental questions emerge:

  • Do we still need human planners?
  • Will AI eventually replace traditional planning roles?
  • Or does AI offer an opportunity to redefine the role of planners in shaping resilient, inclusive, and sustainable places and regions - even nations?

This round table session invites participants to critically explore and discuss the impact of AI on the planning profession and the future of planning.
