In February 2025, Wales proudly became the first UK nation to launch national good practice planning guidance dedicated to protecting our dark skies. Developed through a unique collaboration of multi-disciplinary experts, this pioneering guidance is designed to support planning professionals in making informed decisions and formulating policy that safeguards one of Wales’ most treasured natural resources. Dark skies are more than just beautiful, they’re vital for biodiversity, human well-being, energy conservation, and the cultural and environmental heritage of our communities.
This session offers planning officers a valuable opportunity to learn more about the new Good Practice Guidance on Planning for Dark Skies and understand its practical applications.
By supporting dark sky-friendly lighting and helping to reduce light pollution, you can help to deliver cost-effective, practical improvements that benefit both people and the environment. These small changes can make a big difference - preserving the beauty of our night skies, enhancing biodiversity, and contributing to healthier, more sustainable communities.
We’re looking forward to sharing with you this important guidance.
Speakers for this webinar are Gayle Lister, Planning Policy Officer, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority and Siobhan Wiltshire, Planning Policy Officer, Welsh Government (both are members of the Dark Skies Working Group).
