Event Description
Explore how intersectionality can shape urban design and planning practices. This session will highlight the importance of creating spaces that reflect diverse identities and experiences between individuals and communities. With a focus on active travel, join our panel discussion unpacking data and strategies for ensuring that public spaces are authentically accessible, welcoming, and inclusive of those who may be overlooked in traditional design approaches.
Learning outcomes
Attendees will:
- Gain a deeper understanding of how intersectionality (considering multiple aspects of identity, such as race, gender, ability, and socioeconomic status) shapes urban design and planning practices, and why this perspective is crucial for creating more equitable public spaces.
- Understand the role of third spaces beyond home and work environments for LGBTQIA+ individuals.
- Explore data-driven insights and effective strategies for ensuring urban spaces are accessible, welcoming, and inclusive, particularly for underrepresented communities, with a focus on active travel and mobility. Leave with actionable knowledge on how to apply inclusive design principles to their own urban planning or design work, fostering public spaces that authentically reflect and serve diverse communities.
- Examine best practice in developing safe third spaces through planning policy, also recognising the barriers to achieving safe and inclusive third spaces and how to overcome these in practice.
