From Rome to Athens to Bristol, please join the RTPI Bristol Region Young Planners as part of the ‘Jane’s Walk’ global festival on Tuesday 7th May.

Jane’s Walk, as inspired by the celebrated urbanist Jane Jacobs, is a global movement of free, community-led walking conversations taking place in cities worldwide. The walk in Bristol will focus on re-planning, regeneration and urban living in Bristol. It will be led by Pete Insole (Urban Design Team Manager, Planning, Bristol City Council).

This walk will look at the challenges that an urban area faces before, during and after a regeneration process. Starting at Castle Park we will look at the impact of Bristol’s post war re-planning before moving on to look at today’s City Centre regeneration project that seeks to address these past place legacies and create a new mixed use, sustainable, inclusive neighbourhood.

Please note the walk will start at 11:30am by St Peter’s Church, Castle Park. The walk will be focused around the Broadmead area and will finish at 12:30pm by Castle Park View. Points of interest on the tour will be:

  • Start – St Peter’s Church, Castle Park, the heart of the historic Bristol community
  • Fairfax House, now The Galleries shopping centre proposed for a new mixed use development
  • Broadmead, the City Architect’s post war vision
  • Debenhams, reconnecting the city through a new community
  • Quaker’s Friars, medieval friary to service yard to shopping precinct
  • Finish - Castle Park View, Bristol’s tallest building and potential model for future urban living?

Delegates will need to consider appropriate footwear and to be mindful of prevailing weather conditions on the day.
