Join Devon, Cornwall and Somerset Young Planners on 24th July for a tour of Exeter Science Park, led by the CEO Dr Sally Baker, followed by two presentations on Local Development Orders and their applications, implementation and best practice principles, before a hot food buffet at the Science Park. Feel free to join us for a drink in Pinhoe afterwards.

Home to office space, laboratories, meeting spaces and a public café, plus an under-construction zero-carbon hotel, Exeter Science Park, a joint venture with Exeter City Council, is a science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) business park and conference venue located at the M5 and A30 Junction. The tour will focus on the development of the park, the creation of a business community and the benefits of clustering in promoting economic growth.

The first presentation will be given by Mary Crew, Associate at Stantec and author of the Planning Advisory Service's LDO guidance. Mary has worked on half a dozen LDOs in her time in consultancy, including the prestigious Gravity LDO in Somerset where Agratas has recently announced a £4bn pound investment in a battery manufacturing facility to support the green transition.

The second presentation will be given by Frances Wadsley, Project Manager for Simplified Planning for the Exeter and East Devon Enterprise Zone. Frances has developed multiple LDOs in her time and will provide perspective on how LDOs can support the aspirations of local authorities, where they have been utilised in the Enterprise Zone and some common or particular challenges she is facing at the moment.

Finally, we will share a buffet at the Science Park before some of us head into Pinhoe for a drink – feel free to join us! Your options for hot food will be available when booking.  Vegetarian options are available.

Ultimately, the day offers an opportunity to learn the benefits of clustering in delivering sustainable employment growth and economic development amongst the context of the innovative Exeter Science Park, before learning about LDOs as a planning mechanism and their potential role in facilitating these types of developments (and others). Not to forget - the opportunity to socialise and network with your peers afterwards.
