Planning has a vital role to play to ensure that new development gives increased priority to nature’s recovery and the impending implementation of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is considered a key pillar in this. Good development should not just avoid harming the natural world, it must help to create more space for nature throughout our towns and cities. Integrating more nature into new and existing housing builds in climate resilience, as well as providing habitats for wildlife and many community benefits – from improved health and air quality, to flood prevention and reducing the urban heat island effect.

This session will focus on the role of BNG as an approach to nature recovery, examining its implementation from multiple perspectives. Confirmed speakers will discuss BNG from the perspective of local government, housing developers and the Planning Advisory Service. There will also be more critical perspectives on the subject, as well as from those taking an innovative approach to preparing for BNG. There will also be time for participants to ask questions and engage in debate, in recognition of the significant influence BNG and nature recovery will have on across the planning sector for years to come.

Speakers include:

  • Chair: Dr Christopher Maidment, University of Reading
  • Rebecca Moberly, Planning Advisory Service
  • David Sutherland, Buckinghamshire County Council
  • Chandeni Bissumbhar, Future Homes Hub
  • Oliver Lewis, Joe’s Blooms and more
