With the Scottish Government encouraging local authorities to invite communities to prepare Local Place Plans to feed into new-style Local Development Plans, communities across the country are gearing up to produce their own community-led plans. How are the first wave of Local Place Plans shaping up? What lessons can be learned from these early adopters? Nick Wright will share experience from supporting a number of communities and local authorities with Local Place Planning over the last year, focussing on two very different examples which are feeding into Local Development Planning and wider public sector decision-making in complementary ways.

There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion, with the aim of exploring how practice could evolve to make the most of the new opportunity that Local Place Plans offer for communities and the public sector.

Nick Wright is a town planner specialising in community-led planning. He is a former Convenor of RTPI Scotland. After an earlier career in Scottish local authorities and working on community-based development in Indonesia through VSO, he has worked independently since 2004. His Local Place Plan experience includes:

  • Pilot Local Place Plans in Paisley (Foxbar) and elsewhere.
  • Co-authoring the Scottish Government’s draft How To Guide on Local Place Plans with the Scottish Community Development Centre.
  • Working on three Local Place Plans which have been registered in Highland and Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park.
  • Ongoing work on a further five Local Place Plans in Highland and North Ayrshire.
