This webinar brought to you by RTPI South West is part of the RTPI online event series.

Through this webinar we will consider various questions and issues such as:

  • Where are we now with delivery, what guidance is coming?
  • The need for collaboration and a corporate tie in to deliver.
  • Case Study - St Sidwell’s Point a passivhaus leisure centre in Exeter.
  • Discussion on the learning outcomes from developments and how to overcome the challenges and adversities
  • How can we achieve more for sport balancing with resources available?

Speakers and Topics

  1. Overview
Gary Parsons, Planning Manager at Sport England

  2. Case Study - St Sidwell’s Point a passivhaus leisure centre in Exeter
Karime Hassan, Chief Executive and Growth Director at Exeter City Council

  3. Reflections on the challenges facing sport through planning
    Jacqueline Bennett and Stuart Todd

A presentation based on practical guidance, followed with a discussion on how to overcome the challenges and adversities. Topics to be considered include:

Current Challenges: such as the reactive rather than proactive approach to sports provision through planning; the increasing pressure on land and lack of resources for new provision; outdated models of sports facility provision (single pitch sites, large leisure centres model)

Missed opportunities, things to avoid, where to seek advice…   Issues faced by both Policy and DM planners around demand and needs assessments for strategic planning, the disconnect between delivery of strategy and masterplans and planning applications and the lack of time and knowledge for planners to fully address the issues

Additional challenges moving forward…including those highlighted through the Covid pandemic and the climate change agenda and changes within the planning system

Hints and Tips on how to address the challenges, and – lest it all seems rather bleak! – the opportunities for working in different ways to plan for and provide sports facilities embracing an outcomes based approach to strategy and delivery and planning for real for active lives and environments.
