Guest Speaker - Martin Brown on Buried in Burma

In 2013, a team of investigators, including your speaker, arrived in Myanmar/Burma to explore claims that Spitfires had been buried at Yangon Airport in 1945. The stories from 1945 said that they had been in crates, greased and packed fresh from the UK. The reasons for their burial were unclear, but everyone agreed, such a find would be remarkable, though some said it might be unbelievable. My role was to provide archaeological oversight and to ensure appropriate levels of recording for any discoveries, but I soon got drawn into the contesting stories, the political intrigue and the power of myth.

Join an archaeological expedition scripted by  John Le Carre or Graham Greene, rather than Time Team! This story of lost Burmese Spitfires includes David Cameron, an online games company, Lord Mountbatten, monks and a 100 year old python, not to mention a vicious military junta. Yet, behind the palm trees and the incense smoke, there are truths to be told about our engagement with the past.
