A chartered Town Planner and member of the Transport Planning Society Andrew is a Senior Transport Planner at Transport North East. He works in Transport and Infrastructure planning responsible for the development and delivery of the North East’s transport pipeline and transport plan. Andrew prepares major funding bids develops regional policy and strategy and project manages the delivery of capital and revenue funding in the region. Andrew works closely with local authority, national and subnational partners in linking transport planning wider spatial planning outcomes.
Prior to joining the Transport North East, Andrew spend six years at Transport for London working in development management across South London. He also gained experience in TfL’s Commercial Development team. Whilst in London Andrew was Chair of the RTPI region in 2016 and was Honorary Secretary prior to that. He is now the Honorary Secretary and Treasurer for RTPI North East and is a Planning Aid England volunteer, part of a team providing advice through PAE’s advice line service.

Rachelle Forsyth-Ward is Head of Policy and Strategy Development at Transport North East. She is instrumental in bringing forward local transport improvements in the North East and leads ongoing strategy and policy development on a regional level.
In 2021, the North East Joint Transport Committee delivered its first region-wide Transport Plan, a bold strategic vision to move towards a green, healthy, dynamic and thriving transport system. Rachelle and her team were integral to the development of the Transport Plan and also delivered the region’s first Zero Emission Vehicle Policy in 2022.
Passionate about sustainable travel and reducing the environmental impact of the transport sector, Rachelle is leading the development of a number of upcoming strategies including the North East Active Travel Strategy, Making the Right Travel Choice Strategy and Zero Emission Vehicle Strategy. She also manages relations with key partners including the Department for Transport, local authorities, Nexus and Transport for the North.
With 14 years of experience working in regional transport, Rachelle is bringing the ambition of the North East Transport Plan to life, delivering impactful transport solutions which are life-changing for local people.
Rachelle is a graduate of Newcastle University.

Simon is a Senior Planning and Strategy Officer at Transport for the North. He has led strategies and projects in the UK public sector across transport, energy, climate change and the economy at national, regional and local levels. Simon has recently led development of a regional EV charging infrastructure framework, a data driven approach to openly evidence the charging infrastructure needed to support all journeys made to, from and within the North. Taking a systems approach to identify the right infrastructure needs in the right place, at the right time, to support an accelerated transition to EVs across the North of England.

Natalie is a Transport Planner with an environmental science and economics background. This gives her the contextual knowledge and motivation to prioritise decarbonisation objectives and achieve positive outcomes for people and planet. Natalie has experience contributing to a range of complex multi-modal projects in the North East and across the UK. She is a keen researcher has published academic articles looking at the health benefits of active travel policies and continues to be interested in the wider benefits of transport schemes, and supporting evidence-based decision making.

Ben is an Economist who works across various sectors to demonstrate the economic and social value of projects, largely to help local authorities bid for grant funding from central government. Ben has a particular interest in using economics as a toolkit to influence how we design and implement sustainable travel projects and the mechanisms that are available to encourage behavioural change. Ben is also keen to draw on research and modelling techniques to capture and articulate all benefits of projects, including the more intangible benefits – e.g. the amenity/visual benefit of public realm in communities.

Nicola is an Associate Transport Planner at Arup who is responsible for delivering transport projects in North East England and Scotland. Nicola has a keen interest in development planning, and has worked in both the private sector advising clients on transport requirements for developments, and also worked in the public sector within North East Local Authorities helping them respond to planning applications.
Nicola’s experience includes working for a number of years on the Sky Campus development in London, providing the transport advice to Sky as they looked to extend their Campus to accommodate 12,000 employees within 176,000sqm of media campus. Nicola also worked with the Camden Markets team for a number of years assisting them in developing the market area as a world class retail destination. This included delivering a masterplan which required an extension to the market area, restaurants, employment space, residential units and a Primary School. Nicola continues to provide transport design advice to the architects. Locally, Nicola has coordinated the Transport Assessments to support the Teesworks planning applications (seven to date) in the Tees Valley and is currently project managing the Arup support to provide expert evaluation to applications to the Bus Partnership Fund in Scotland, advising Transport Scotland on bus infrastructure investment
Nicola is a Chartered Transport Planning Professional (CTPP) and formerly the Chair of the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) North East and Cumbria Region. Her current role on the CIHT regional committee has a focus on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. Nicola is a member of North East Community of Professional Engineers (NECoPE) and Former Board Director and Secretary of the Transport Planning Society (TPS). Nicola is a current Branch Representative for the Transport Planning Society in the North East.
