York Central is one of the largest city centre development opportunities in the country. The 45-hectare site has been stalled for over 40 years and has been subject to previous failed marketing attempts reflecting the once fragmented ownership and prohibitive up-front infrastructure requirements.
Please join Homes England Project Director Ian Gray and Senior Development Manager Stephanie Hiscott for a walking tour of the York Central development site. On the walking tour you will see the scale of the development proposed, understand the challenges in bringing forward the site and learn more about the proposals for the future.
The project is now being brought forward by landowners Homes England and Network Rail in collaboration with the National Railway Museum and City of York Council. The project successfully gained outline planning permission in 2019 and the reserved matters for the infrastructure were approved late last year.
The scheme will deliver up to 2,500 new homes and up to 112,00m2 of commercial space. The site will also enable a £50m extension to the National Railway Museum and a new enhanced western entrance to York Railway Station, which links the city directly to London as well as the other Northern Powerhouse cities such as Manchester, Newcastle and Leeds.
The project will transform underused land into distinctive residential neighbourhoods, cultural spaces and a high-quality commercial quarter. The project will power York’s economy into the future, helping to provide the homes the city needs and grow its economy by 20%.
Walking difficulty - An easy walk which is generally flat, all footpath. The walk will be approx. 2 miles. Please wear strong walking shoes and bring waterproofs.
Meeting point to be confirmed in joining instructions.
The walk will be limited in numbers so early booking is recommended.
