Nutrient deposition and eutrophication are not a new for the Solent coastline, but have now been brought to national attention following Natural England’s decision to advise against permitting any residential development within the whole of the Solent area, unless it is ‘nitrogen neutral’ - effectively causing a moratorium on housebuilding across one of the UK’s key economic growth areas. This presentation will focus on the Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust Nitrate Reduction scheme. The Trust’s scheme, in simple terms, will provide a means of mitigating and reducing the nitrate impact of planned housing as well as creating new habitats for wildlife.
