This webinar forms part of the RTPI Online series and is brought to you by RTPI West of Scotland Chapter.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the publication of ‘The Death and Life of Great American Cities’ by Jane Jacobs. In the context of the climate emergency and a changing role for cities post-pandemic, this discussion reflect on Jacobs’ ideas and the lessons cities including Glasgow can learn. The RTPI West of Scotland committee is delighted to be joined by participants from academia, public and private practice, and community involvement for this event.

Speakers:

Jude Barber, Architect-Director, Collective Architecture

Niall Murphy, Deputy Director, Glasgow City Heritage Trust

Dr Andrew Hoolachan, Lecturer in Planning (Urban Studies), University of Glasgow

Health & Inclusive Planning (Planning Knowledge)

By attending this event you can:

  • Gain an introduction to the work of one of the most influential urban thinkers and activists of the 20th century;
  • Explore, in the context of Jacobs’ work, the factors which contribute to (and hinder) successful, sustainable and equitable cities;
  • Consider if certain areas of planning theory and practice merit re-appraisal in light of contemporary challenges such as climate change and the Covid-19 pandemic.
