The Bird Aware Solent project was the winner of the RTPI SE Awards for Planning Excellence 2018. The project sought to provide special protection for overwintering birds on the Solent coastline, following concerns by natural environment and bird experts about human disturbance to the wildlife, and the negative effects of further planned housing.

The Solent coast is fortunate enough to have around 125,000 internationally important birds return to its shores each winter. With planned house building and predicted increases in visitor levels at the coast, it became clear that a strategic approach was needed to create a coastline where people's recreation does not impact on overwintering birds. Nature conservation bodies and Local Planning Authorities came together to deliver a solution in the form of Bird Aware Solent. Join the South Coast Young Planners in conversation with Anna Parry, Partnership Manager for Bird Aware Solent, to find out how they did it, and the lessons they learnt along the way.
