Research description

The research investigated the extent to which climate justice implications are addressed as part of planning responses to Urban Heat Islands in Berlin and London. Key literature reviews, policy analyses of planning documents and outcomes, and thematic analysis of superordinate planning documents revealed a lack of consideration of climate justice aspects through formal planning processes in both cities, while in London, the UHI itself was only scantly addressed – despite strong coverage on a superordinate policy basis. These findings indicate a need for continued and deliberate mainstreaming of climate justice in planning and stronger congruity between planning policies and outcomes regarding UHIs.
