Training goal

Planning inquiries address the most complex development schemes and represent only a small fraction of the planning decisions made annually. Taking part in a planning inquiry is a great professional opportunity, an experience which should not be missed. However, public inquiries can be a daunting and unfamiliar prospect due to the complexity of their subject matter, their rarity, and the overtly legal nature of the procedure.

In this masterclass we will provide you with the tools and techniques to prepare properly for participation in a public inquiry. This masterclass is suitable for anyone who is working in town planning, or a related discipline, who is preparing for an inquiry or working towards gaining inquiry experience.

Learning outcomes

  • After completing this masterclass, you will understand your role and duties as an expert witness at a public inquiry
  • Learn how to present your evidence to the best of your ability
  • Learn how to deal with cross-examination in a legal environment
  • Gain specialised knowledge to prepare for a public inquiry
  • You will gain confidence by practising scenarios in small groups and the trainer will respond to your questions in the live workshop

CPD masterclass structure and delivery

This masterclass is delivered in two parts. You will start with Part 1: Self-guided learning, which consists of trainer’s video presentations, and exercises on the RTPI Learn platform. The self-guided learning will take approximately four hours to complete, which you can arrange around your other commitments. This flexible learning prepares you for the live interactive Part 2: Online workshop, with your trainer and peers.

Your joining instructions will be sent to you on the day the masterclass is scheduled to open, as you see below.

  • 25 September 2026 – Part 1: Self-guided learning opens for you from this date.
  • 22 October 2026 – Part 2: Online workshop (14:00 to 16:30)

The masterclass is delivered by a trainer expert in the field.
