Chief Planners of Tomorrow 2026 now open
Applications for the Chief Planners of Tomorrow work-shadowing scheme from the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) are now open.
The scheme offers RTPI Young Planners the chance to step into the shoes of a Chief Planning Officer for the day. Designed to inspire the next generation of planning leaders, the programme provides a unique opportunity to gain confidence, explore a potential career progression path, and see leadership styles in action.
Participants will spend a day shadowing senior leaders currently working in local authorities and other senior planning roles across the UK.
Successful applicants will gain first-hand insight into how complex, high-level planning decisions are shaped and delivered, supporting their continuing professional development (CPD) and strengthening their knowledge and skill sets.
Placements are available across the UK, and the Institute welcomes applications from all regions and nations.
Young planners who have taken part in previous years have described the initiative as career-shaping and invaluable. Thomas Ellison, who shadowed Rosemary Daly at the Department for Infrastructure in Northern Ireland, said: “For private sector employees like myself, it provided an insightful experience of working within the public sector planning system – an experience I would not otherwise have got.”
Jessica Collins, who shadowed Tracy Darke at Westminster City Council, said: “I had an amazing day… Tracy shared a wealth of experience and insight, helping me better understand the complexities of the role and the workings of the public sector, particularly valuable as I come from a private sector background.
“I would strongly encourage every young planner to take part in this programme. It’s a great opportunity to gain new perspectives early in your career and to broaden your understanding of the planning system’s complexities.”
Applications for 2026 are now open. Early applications are strongly encouraged as the scheme is frequently oversubscribed. Find out more and apply via the RTPI website.
