The Vice-President, the President, and the Immediate Past President are collectively referred to as the Presidential Team.
The Presidential Team play an ambassadorial role, representing the RTPI at a variety of external and internal engagements, meeting with, listening to and promoting RTPI members throughout their tenure and using their influence and standing to promote the value of planning and showcase planning excellence.
The Presidential Team work collaboratively with the Board of Trustees to support delivery of the RTPI’s Strategic Plan.

Role Title
RTPI Vice President (subsequently President and then Immediate Past President)
Outline of role
The Vice-President assists the President in representing the Institute and its members and may deputise for the President at engagements when needed. The role will involve some travel in the UK and Ireland (and occasionally internationally), with some overnight stays required.
The Vice-President serves as deputy chair for all General Assembly meetings.
The Vice President is a member of the Policy, Practice and Research Committee
The Vice President will attend Board of Trustee meetings and Away Days as an observer.
Impact of the role
As an elected ambassador for the RTPI and its members, the Vice President has the visibility and influence to promote and shape the work of RTPI. They work to inspire members and future planners, hear what matters to our members and advocate for excellence in planning that cuts across sectors and geographical locations.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible to stand for election as Vice-President, candidates must:
- Be a chartered member of the RTPI
- Have held a governance role at the RTPI for a continuous period of at least one year in the last five years preceding your appointment.
- Be an experienced and knowledgeable member of the profession, with a sound understanding of the key issues and debates faced by planners and the planning system.
- Be a strong and passionate advocate for planning excellence and the role of the RTPI in securing this
Time commitment
Appointment to the Presidential Team is for a three-year term running from 1 January 2027 to 31 December 2029, progressing from Vice-President to President and then to Immediate Past President during that time.
During their Vice President year, the Vice President will typically attend:
- 18 internal meetings at the RPTI (General Assembly, Board, Nations and Regions Panel and the Policy, Practice and Research Committee)
- Flagship events, such as the annual RTPI conference and awards
- Visits around the UK and Ireland and some occasional overseas travel.
Please note, attendance at events and visits both in the UK and overseas will increase in the Presidential year.
How to get involved
To apply to stand as a candidate for Vice President, applicants are required to complete a nomination form, providing a candidate statement, photo and the names and details of six chartered RTPI members who support their nomination.
Candidate statement will be published on the RTPI website and on the independent election scrutineer's voting pages. The elected Vice President will be announced at the end of October 2026.
Application closing date
Applications (also known as self-nominations) for the 2027 Vice President will open on 19 August 2026 and close on 16 September 2026.
Role start date
1 January 2027.
