The Nominations Committee is a subcommittee of the RTPI Board of Trustees. It has delegated authority to make decisions on behalf of the Board, including on applications to become a Fellow of the Institute, appointing representatives of the RTPI to external bodies and special awards.

Co-opted member of the Nominations Committee

 

Outline of role

The role of the co-opted member of the Nominations Committee is to, alongside other members of the Nominations Committee, review and make decisions on behalf of the Board of Trustees regarding applications including for RTPI fellowship, special awards and RTPI representation on external bodies. Members of the Nominations Committee also keep under review the selection criteria and processes for Fellowship, awards, honours and positions on external bodies and other selection processes referred to it by the Board of Trustees.

Members of the Nominations Committee are asked to review the circulated papers ahead of the meetings. This will normally include application forms as well as reports. Members of the Nominations Committee are required to make decisions based on agreed selection criteria and/or guidance in order to provide a consistent, open and transparent approach to decision-making.

 

Impact of the role

The Nominations Committee Chair reports the work of the committee to the Board of Trustees. Of particular importance is that the decisions of the Nominations Committee form part of the RTPI’s approach to recognising the contribution that individual members, or other individuals, have made in promoting the art and science of planning.

 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Open to non-members or members based in the UK.
  • Experience in a governance role, or experience of working on a committee.
  • Experience or knowledge of the not-for-profit and/or charity sector.
  • A qualification or background in planning or another built environment profession.

You will have recent and relevant experience in membership organisations and/or in professional rewards and recognition.

Minimum commitment 

The Nominations Committee meets three to four times a year. Meetings typically last approximately two hours and are typically held online via Microsoft Teams.

Reading of papers and preparation for the meeting in advance

  1. Papers for the meetings are normally circulated via a dedicated document portal a minimum of one week in advance. Reading papers should take approximately half a day.
  2. Members of the Nominations Committee are expected to commit to preparing for, attending and actively contributing to meetings.

Length of term

3 year term, renewable for one further three-year term on the approval by the Board of Trustees.
