The need to deliver sustainable development remains central to the purpose of the planning system amid fundamental technical and structural reforms, rapid advances in digital technology and shifting politics.
This one-day conference will explore what sustainable development looks like in this fast-changing environment and examine some of the opportunities and barriers to achieving it. We will gain insight into how sustainable development can be delivered in practice both at the strategic and local scale.
A range of expert speakers will share ideas and case studies in exploring sustainability from each of the economic, environmental and social perspectives. We will also hear how, powered by artificial intelligence and digital tech, the three strands of sustainability can better link together.
The event will be of particular interest to plan-makers and development management planners, as well as developers, agents and infrastructure providers.
What you'll gain:
- Understanding the obstacles to delivery of sustainable growth in meeting the country’s housing and economic needs.
- Learning about practical, innovative ideas around delivering low-carbon development, community-led housing and social infrastructure.
- The opportunities – and risks – in the increasing use of AI in co-ordinating sustainable development and engaging communities in the growth agenda.
This event is eligible for up to five hours of CPD and covers the following subjects from the core CPD framework:
- Placemaking and design
- Development and infrastructure planning
- Housing
Programme:
A timed programme, topics and speakers will be updated as we approach the event.
- Keynote speech - Meeting the challenge - the past and the future of sustainable development
This session will set out the context for needing to accelerate the delivery of more homes in England and the challenge of doing so sustainably and in a way that takes people with us. Taking the original planning acts of the 1940s and successful post war delivery as a starting point, Matthew Taylor draws lessons from the past in meeting the needs of the future through a longer term vision of sustainable growth that balance urban regeneration and rural development, planned urban extension - and new settlements from new towns to garden communities and back again.
