Core CPD Framework:
- Climate change and environmental planning
- 1.5 CPD hours
The UK has significant development targets across energy generation and transmission, housing, data centres, water and more. So, the risk of cumulative effects arising between projects has never been higher.
Where a development proposal poses a significant risk to the environment, more formalised and in-depth environmental assessment is required, often including EIA. There is a specific need to consider the cumulation of effects on the environment from the project seeking consent and other projects.
This is a challenging area of practice as data can be limited and the potential boundaries of such cumulative effects for each topic in the assessment risks becoming very broad.
Whilst a small number of guidance documents exist, there is little training available to aid practitioners understanding. The confusion of terminology both within the EIA process and with other forms of environmental assessment also makes current practice difficult for those involved
This short online training was developed for planning officers, consenting managers, statutory consultee staff, environmental consultants and developers who are involved in the consenting of projects that require Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), including topic specialists contributing chapters to these documents.
Training Goal
Recognise and respond to challenges relating to cumulative effects in environmental impact assessments. Develop clarity on what an effective assessment looks like and apply this understanding to everyday practice.
Learning outcomes:
- By the end of this training, you will be able to identify how common forms of cumulative effects arise between projects (examples provided)
- Clarify and learn the terminology relating to cumulative effects, how it differs from that used in other environmental assessments, so you will use them adequately for your project
- Review the essential information to scope and deliver a focused assessment of cumulative effects and improve the quality of your reports.
- Appreciate how the process of assessing and seeking to contribute to the mitigation and management of cumulative effect is structured; how the flexibility and iteration within this process is essential for success.
- Applying what you learnt during this training to your day job will improve the quality of your work and help decision makers relying on your reports.
