The Royal Town Planning Institute offers its deepest condolences to the entire Royal Family at this difficult time. Her Majesty will be remembered for her extraordinary commitment and unwavering dedication to her duty. As a mark of respect we are postponing all events over the next few days.

By Susan Murray, Director of the David Hume Institute

Tuesday 20 September 2022

RTPI Scotland holds an annual commemorative lecture to advance Geddesian thinking. This year's lecture will be given by Susan Murray, Director, David Hume Institute who will use her unique position to discuss how Geddes’ ideas fit within the current context for placemaking and planning in Scotland, if they can help us to tackle the challenges that we face and, if so, what is needed to support to make this happen.

As Director of the David Hume Institute Susan is leading a growth in focus on people and the economy at the Edinburgh based think tank, which specialises in delivering rigorous research and thought-provoking events. Recent work includes A Scotland of Better Places published in 2021 and Understanding Scotland, a quarterly analysis of people's perceptions of Scotland's economy.

A key goal for Susan is partnering with others to ensure that great ideas for change lead to action. Susan is a Clore Social Leadership Fellow and studied at the University of Edinburgh, Goldsmiths College University of London and Aberdeen Business School. She is strongly motivated by the power of place and nature to change lives, which led her to serve for five years as a board member of NatureScot.
