Pillar 3: People

How will we enable planners to reach new heights in their careers?

  • We will support your education and personal growth at every stage of your career journey. We will provide career development opportunities and offer enhanced and relevant training, including online CPD and events. Furthermore, we will keep you informed of developments in the profession and continuously work to enhance your professional status.

  • We will develop the planning leaders of today and tomorrow. Our training will support leaders in planning to make better decisions, empower their teams, solve complex problems, manage workloads, monitor wellbeing, engage effectively with stakeholders and unlock the capacity in the system.

  • We will grow the profession’s depth of expertise. This includes the mindsets, skillsets and knowledge that will empower planners to deliver on society’s needs. We will help planners to gain greater knowledge of strategic planning, support the transition to a net-zero economy and deliver inclusive spaces and places for all our communities.

  • We will lead on diversity and inclusion. We will continue to work with employers, other built environment professional bodies and educational institutions to create an inclusive profession where all planners can thrive. We will support our members to embed inclusion and diversity into their professional practice, ensuring they are equipped to make decisions that support diversity and inclusion.

  • We will prioritise your wellbeing. We will continue to invest in our welfare helpline and provide additional information and training in relation to wellbeing issues.

  • We will connect you with other planning professionals. We will help you to network with peers so that you can share challenges, ideas and best practice, celebrate successes and keep up with the pace of change. We will foster a sense of belonging and community through awards ceremonies and other events, including events that are accessible to our international members.

  • We will elevate the opportunities for volunteers. Over a third of our members would like to become more involved with the RTPI and 65% of our volunteers say that volunteering with us helps to expand their professional network. As we strongly value and welcome the contribution made by over 1,000 dedicated volunteers, we will provide even greater recognition of volunteers’ roles and broaden the cohort of volunteers. We will also deliver a consistent volunteer journey to benefit all members who volunteer with the institute.
