Pillar 1: Purpose
How will we support a better understanding of what planning is and what planners do?
- We will champion you. We will positively promote planners as forces for good: enablers of economic, social and environmental development who are helping to create a better built environment and protect our natural world. We will also clearly and loudly articulate the value and purpose of planning so that stakeholders, politicians and the public have a better understanding and appreciation of the role of planning and planners.
- We will highlight your role as astute placemakers. Through horizon scanning, we will work with you to shape a collective vision of the future of planning that excites and inspires all our stakeholders.
- We will build trust in you. We will demonstrate the importance of – and further improve – professional standards, while outlining the benefits of Chartership in the planning profession. We will provide greater transparency about the role of planning at a regional, national and local level.
- We will equip you to combat the climate and nature emergencies and address rising inequality. As a planner, you are crucial to securing the future of our planet. You can help to address climate change and biodiversity loss[1], promote gender equality and reduce social inequality. We will equip you with the skills and knowledge to support the development of socially and environmentally sustainable urban and rural areas. This will further the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda.[2]
- We will stand up for you. Planners encounter significant challenges on a day-to-day basis, from budget, capacity and resourcing issues through to perception concerns. So, we will support you to address those challenges through our welfare services and supportive network.
- We will celebrate your success. To do this, we will showcase examples of the best of planning, including our award winners as well as other great planners and great projects. We will also communicate how what you do helps to enhance society, shaping people’s lives for the better.
- We will run your membership organisation effectively and efficiently. Our experienced team will maintain financial stability and use creativity, best practice and technology to support your membership, meeting your need for value-for-money services that benefit your work.
