Education policy review
The context for initial planning education and the profession at large has changed significantly since the current principles of accreditation were adopted in 2003. In response to these shifts, the Education Policy Review set out to examine “the time taken, the delivery mechanisms and the content of accredited planning courses”. Following extensive stakeholder consultation, the RTPI adopted an updated Policy Statement on Initial Planning Education in February 2025. This policy reaffirms the RTPI’s commitment to excellence in planning education and support for accredited Planning Schools and their students.
With changes to the required Learning Outcomes, effective Planning School criteria and terminology for accredited course types, the RTPI is setting a new benchmark for the future of planning education, one that is responsive, inclusive, and aligned with the evolving demands of the profession.
We are continuing to look at other opportunities to support students receiving their initial planning education, including ways to support Planning Schools seeking to implement further work-based learning opportunities for their students.
