The Climate Crisis

Jointly produced with the Town and Country Planning Association, this guide outlines how the planning system can support local authorities in considering climate impacts as part of everyday decision-making. As the UK experiences more frequent heatwaves, heavier rainfall and increasing pressures on households and infrastructure, the guide highlights how planning can play a central role in supporting both net zero ambitions and long-term community resilience.

The guide emphasises the importance of planning in shaping places that reduce carbon emissions – through measures such as energy-efficient buildings, sustainable transport and renewable energy – while also helping communities adapt to changing conditions, including flooding, coastal change and overheating.

Designed as an accessible introduction to key issues, the guide provides a starting point for local authorities, planners and communities seeking practical, achievable approaches to climate-aware planning.
