RTPI response to the inquiry into young people and the built environment
In April 2026, the House of Lords Built Environment Committee opened a short inquiry into young people and the built environment and the RTPI was invited to provide written evidence as part of this Inquiry.
Our written evidence explores:
- The attitude and interest of children and young people towards the built environment sector and issues surrounding the topic.
- The opportunity for the built environment to be better incorporated into the national curriculum.
- Planning as a career option in the built environment and the benefits of encouraging children and young people to pursue it as a career.
- How children and young people can be better engaged within the built environment, and particularly in the planning process.
- The current legislative and policy landscape in relation to children and young people and the planning system.
- The barriers to engaging children and young people in the built environment and how digital tools can support this.
- The benefits of developing a greater interest in the built environment for children and young people, and wider society.
