Planning drone futures: Practice advice launch reception
The RTPI are publishing bleeding edge practice advice on planners’ use of drones, and planning for drone infrastructure. To celebrate its launch, we’re hosting a panel event followed by a drinks reception.
Hear from the authors of the guidance, Dr Anna Jackman and Dr Paul Cureton, alongside expert panellists.
There will be an opportunity for audience discussion and participation.
What to expect:
In the near future unmanned aerial drones may be a part of everyday life in the UK: Flying in corridors above you, delivering shopping, and even moving passengers between transport hubs. Amazon has already started delivering parcels by drone in Darlington.
Planners have a unique responsibility to harness this technological advancement for the public good, and ensure that drone infrastructure is integrated into the built environment in socially, environmentally, and economically sustainable and just ways.
Time may be short. Given the lifespans of local and strategic plans, rapid advancements in drone capabilities, and their potential to significantly shape the build environment, planners need to begin developing future-facing local plan policy now.
Dr Anna Jackman (University of Reading) and Dr Paul Cureton (Lancaster University) will look to the future of the technology and present new RTPI practice advice on both planners’ use of drones, and planning for their widespread adoption.
Anna and Paul will be joined by expert speakers from the worlds of policy and practice (TBC).
There will also be a display of RTPI-commissioned illustrations of the ways in which drones may shape the UK built environment.
What you'll gain:
Insights into:
- Key concepts and issues for planners related to the widespread roll out of aerial drones in the UK;
- the possible impacts of drones on the UK’s built and natural environments, explored through case studies; and
- how planning policy could shape the roll out of drone infrastructure so that it contributes to place making and is delivered in a way that is socially, environmentally, and economically equitable.
This event is eligible for up to 1 hour of CPD and covers the following subjects from the core CPD framework:
- Placemaking and Design
Development and Infrastructure Planning
