Heritage conference (Hertfordshire)

10 July 2026 at 09:00 - 17:00
The Castle, Hertford, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom, SG14 1HR

Following the success of last year’s Heritage Conference in St Albans, the RTPI invites you to join us for a second in-person event exploring the role of heritage in planning. This one-day conference brings together professionals from planning, heritage and urban design to examine both established and emerging issues shaping our historic environments.

Through expert speakers, real-world case studies and interactive sessions, the conference will explore how heritage is understood, assessed and successfully integrated into planning decisions.

What to expect:

This dynamic, full-day programme offers a blend of insight, practical learning and engagement, including:

  • Expert-led presentations on key heritage topics
  • Real-life case studies exploring challenges and best practice
  • Interactive Q&A sessions using Slido
  • A guided walking tour of a historic town
  • A collaborative roundtable discussion to share perspectives

Topics will include understanding heritage beyond the built fabric, assessing heritage harm, adaptive reuse and design in historic settings, retrofitting buildings for climate resilience, and the role of different impact assessments in planning decisions.

What you'll gain:

  • Deepen your understanding of heritage as a planning consideration
  • Gain practical tools for assessing significance, harm and planning balance
  • Learn from successful examples of development within historic environments
  • Explore approaches to retrofit and climate adaptation in heritage assets
  • Build confidence in applying heritage, townscape and visual assessments
  • Connect with peers and industry professionals across sectors.

This event is eligible for up to 5 hours of CPD and covers the following subjects from the core CPD framework:

Heritage Assessment & Planning Decisions
Understand how to evaluate heritage significance, assess impacts, and apply balanced judgements to support sound and defensible planning outcomes.

Managing Change in Historic Environments
