Join the Young Planners for a regeneration walking tour of Southport, in celebration of the RTPI’s coastal week. The programme includes a schedule of sites and attractions that will be covered in the walking tour. The walking tour has been prepared in consultation with heritage, tourism and regeneration officers at Sefton Council.


  • 11.00am – Arrival, registration and refreshments (teas, coffee and biscuits will be provided on arrival).
  • 11.15am – Welcome. 

A brief welcome to and overview of Southport.  We will look at some of the benefits and opportunities Southport brings to Sefton and North West, but also some of the barriers/constraints/challenges it faces.  We will also cover some of the regeneration projects/developments Sefton Council are involved in to help regenerate Southport and ensure its survival during difficult times.

  • 11.45am – Tour of regeneration sites in Southport (led by Sue Crompton, Heritage Officer at Sefton Council)

This will offer an exciting opportunity to participate in a guided tour around Southport Town Centre and see in person some of the exciting future development sites and existing projects contributing towards the regeneration of Southport.  Of particular interest will visit the following sites:

    • Market Hall; Garrick Theatre (Lord Street); B&M/Kingsway Site; Pumphouse; Kings Gardens; Go-Surf and Pleasureland; Scarisbrick THI Public Realm; Victoria Baths and Neville Street; Southport Pier; MLEC; Bold Street; Grand casino; Lord Street Upper Floors, public Realm and Atkinson, Chapel Street, McDonalds Digital Enterprise; Back to Market Hall.
  • 1.00pm – Close


  • Breakfast and lunch can be purchased at Southport Market where the walking tour starts and finishes - Southport Market is a Council owned building currently being used as a food hall.
  • A location map will be sent to attendees in advance, showing where the Market Hall is situated in relation to the train station and main car parks.
  • A walking map handout will be provided on the day showing the sites and route.
