The RTPI is committed to combatting the climate and nature emergencies and we aim to lead by example. So, we developed a Climate Action Plan to quantify and significantly reduce our emissions. This plan allows us to manage and, where possible, mitigate the climate impact of the RTPI.
Thanks to the actions taken, we are on track to achieve our target of net zero emissions in 2025. These actions include switching to renewable energy, restricting domestic air travel as well as international travel, introducing a cycle to work scheme, and reducing the printed version of The Planner magazine from monthly to bi-monthly.
Our London office now has energy-efficient windows and energy-efficient lighting systems. It has also been reconfigured to support more effective virtual working. Additionally, we have reduced the number of printed materials at RTPI events and introduced more environmentally friendly menu options.
Our thought leadership – including research and practice papers, training and events – provides our members with vital insights into the climate and nature emergencies and how these intersect with planning. We have produced papers on biodiversity in planning, sustainable development and net zero transport, among other topics. We have also hosted events that address biodiversity and climate change.
We have made good progress against our own goals. So, over the next five years, we will focus on equipping our members with the skills and knowledge to help deliver their organisations’ net zero and nature targets. Following engagement with our members, we are shifting our emphasis from delivering climate action to combatting the climate and nature emergencies.
